What makes a great design?
良好的設計應該包含什麼？好的外觀？功能性極佳？還是兩者兼具？
Historically, the role of the designer has been to solve a problem. But a husband and wife team working today are challenging preconceptions about the designer’s traditional function.
從歷史來看，設計師最主要的角色是「解決問題」
但有一對設計師夫妻正挑戰這項先入為主的傳統功能觀念。
Anthony Dunne is professor and head of the Design Interactions programme at the Royal College of Art. Fiona Raby is professor of industrial design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and reader in Design Interactions at the RCA.
Together, they are world leaders in an alternative design movement which crosses the boundaries between sociology, architecture, science and politics, often asking more questions than it answers. Anthony Dunne described this movement in his 1999 book, Hertzian Tales, as ‘critical design’.

Dunne & Raby currently working on a text called a/b that elaborates on, and develops this list. It's a sort of a manifesto that positions what we do in relation to how most people understand design.
Dunne和Raby將他們所認為的「設計」與大部分人們所認知的「設計」稱為a/b，也許我們應該重新思考「設計」的思維！
Challenging the concept that design must fulfil a purely functional and aesthetic purpose, Dunne & Raby use design as a medium to stimulate discussion and debate amongst designers, industry and the public about the social, cultural and ethical implications of current and emerging technologies.
他們挑戰設計最傳統的概念：設計必須滿足功能與美觀。Dunne和Raby認為設計只是種媒介，它必須激發設計師、產業和社會大眾之間的火花，才是成功的設計！
往往我們認為設計最重要的目的是創造出好的成品，但是Dunne和Raby認為最重要的不是最後的結果，而是利用設計這項過程，來激發設計師、產業與社會之間的火花，鼓勵彼此相互溝通、辯論，這樣所設計出來的成品才會越來越進步、越來越符合社會的需求。
因此，設計師最主要的角色不單單只是解決問題，而是「創造更多的問題再解決」，並扮演好溝通的角色。不要一味的堅持己見，這樣所設計出來的東西，並不一定符合社會所需。
