新年的來由：

New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count increments by one. Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner.[1] The New Year of the Gregorian calendar, today mostly in use, falls on 1 January (New Year's Day), as was the case both in the old Roman calendar (at least after about 713 BCE) and in the Julian calendar that succeeded it.

The order of months was January to December in the Old Roman calendar during the reign of King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BCE, according to Plutarch and Macrobius, and has been in continuous use since that time. Many countries, such as the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the United States, mark 1 January as a national holiday.

元旦英文翻譯是 New Year's Day，所謂的元旦就是國曆的一月一日，跨完年的就是元旦，也就是西方世界的新年，所以元旦英文就是 New Year's Day 囉！元旦與我們東方人過的農曆新年不太一樣，農曆新年也稱為春節（Chinese New Year），通常都在國曆的一月或二月左右的時間，東西文化還是有一點點差異的。來看看元旦英文有哪些造句：

美國的新年--紐約時報廣場前的「蘋果倒數」

New Year’s Eve is an important date for people to socialize in the United States. The famous tradition began in 1903. A “ball-drop” is held in New York City as attendees count down to midnight, and the ceremony is broadcast to the entire nation. It has since become a major celebration on New Year’s Eve in the United States.

在美國，跨年日是一個主要的社交節日。早於1903年開始，紐約市的時報廣場會在跨年倒數時舉行「降球儀式」，並向整個美國進行廣播，成為美國慶祝跨年夜的一個主要的傳統儀式。每年跨年夜的23:59:00開始，那個重1,070磅、長6英尺的水晶球便開始在時報廣場的頂處徐徐降下，並於午夜十二點整剛好到達底處。

In Spain, people usually spend New Year’s Eve with their families. When the clock strikes at midnight, people eat one grape for every strike of the clock, for a total of twelve. The tradition began in 1909 as a result of too many grapes from the recent harvest. Farmers came up with the idea as a way to deal with the surplus. After the 12 strikes, people greet each other and celebrate with sparkling wine.

元旦連假到！怎麼寫「休假通知」給外國客戶咧？

holiday & vacation

holiday 意思是「假日」，holiday 是 holy+day，神聖的日子，像 Christmas、New year 各種節慶的放假就是 holiday。美國人的 the holidays/the holiday season，指的是 Christmas 到 New Year's Day 的這段假期。Vacation 這個字，長得很像 vacancy（空位），指停止工作或讀書等較長的空檔，像 summer vacation。

一般來說美國人愛用 vacation，英國人喜歡 holiday。從這裡可以約莫可感受，英國人重其意義，美國人享受放空。

你是來度假還是出差？

eg. He works all the year round , without a holiday.

他一年到頭工作，沒有休假。

day off & leave

day off 指不用上班，休息的日子或一段時間，如果是好幾天不上班，就用 several days off，搭配的動詞是 take。 leave 則是指請假，請假用 ask for leave，准假用 grant leave。病假是 sick leave，事假是 personal leave；休假前寫一封通知給大家，休假通知叫"on leave notice."

eg. I'm working without overtime pay, so I can take some days off later.

我加班沒有加班費，所以可以在加班後補休。

eg. Going on leave, he devolved his duties on his deputy.

他休假前把工作移交給副手。

break & weekend

break 短暫休息，開會、上課間中場休息，我們會用"take a break"，而不是"take a rest"。

中文說假日，連周末、周日也算在那，但老外的 weekend 雖說是 day off，但不是 holiday 也不是 vacation，不可混為一談。如果是周末連續放假，一般會用 long weekend。

休息一下吧，好嗎？（會議開很久或陷入僵局時，可以用這句）
